Gas Installations & Your Safety

The Mechanical Contractors Association of Saskatchewan is a trade association comprised of contractors and suppliers of the plumbing, heating and mechanical industry. The Association has a long record of worthwhile service in Saskatchewan, having grown out of the “Saskatchewan Association of Sanitary & Heating Engineers” in 1919.

Code of Ethics

“Members of the Association shall abide by all applicable laws, codes, regulations and standard practices to safeguard our industry’s performance for the protection of public health and the environment.”

The Mechanical Contractors Association of Saskatchewan Inc. supports SaskPower Gas Inspections “Red Tag Program” and works with Gas Inspections to assure the proper use of the program. A licensed gas contractor has the training and background to assess low and high risk situations for the best interests of the customer. He cares about your safety and the safety of everyone living in your building.

What is a Gas Fired Appliance?
Some examples of gas fired appliances are; furnace, water heater, unit heater i.e. garage heater, or shop heater, radiant tube heater and a gas fired fireplace.

Why have your furnace serviced?
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a tough and ruthless enemy. It is a colorless and odourless gas, produced whenever fuel burns. When your furnace is running smoothly, the carbon monoxide travels up the chimney and out of the house. But if there are problems with the chimney or your gas appliance and the (CO) escapes into your home, it can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and death.

How to Hire a Licensed Gas Contractor?
With safety at stake it is clearly important to hire a competent contractor! If you do not currently deal with a qualified home-heating contractor year after year, but if you are looking for a reputable firm, keep these tips in mind.

bullet

Make sure the contractor is a licensed gas contractor and the technician is a qualified gas fitter, ask to see the gas fitters ticket before he does the work.

bullet

Find out if the work is covered by a warranty or maintenance contract before hiring a contractor.

bullet

Ask your neighbors, family and friends for recommendations.

bullet

Ask for references and check them.

bullet

Obtain three written estimates of any work necessary and written confirmation whether or not subcontractors will be involved.

bullet

Be wary of any contractor offering a “special deal” over the telephone or at your door.
